Civil engineers to the Rescue!
So it’s official; we are in a recession. Yes, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), a nonprofit group of economists who classify business cycles, recently announced that the US has been in a recession since December 2007. You no longer will have to say the “R” word in hushed tones.
In times of emergency, engineers will often volunteer or be called upon to render professional engineering services. The circumstances under which the services are provided will often require judgment and on-the-spot assessments and decisions without the luxury of the investigations that are normally obtained before stating opinions or making recommendations.

Ask not what ASCE can do for you, but ask what you can do for ASCE!
You have all heard President John F. Kennedy’s famous inauguration speech with the timeless phrase ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country’. As president of ASCE’s Golden Gate Branch this year, I would like to posit that same question to you but instead “Ask not what ASCE can do for you, but ask what you can do for ASCE”.
The San Francisco Section’s Younger Member Forum (YMF) is proud to announce the return of the Western Regional Younger Member Council (WRYMC) to San Francisco on January 23 and 24.
A question that engineers often ask is “what is the standard of care must be followed to avoided being negligent in the practice of civil engineering.” That question, unfortunately, cannot be answered with precision. Rather, the answer is “it depends.”
